Hi Maemo / Meego fans, here is another techical article for you !
Here is the beta 1 release for the widgets engine. Nothing is final yet, and some stuff are broken, but this version should not brick your device, and should even be usable.
With this beta, I also invite developers to think about writing simple widgets for their apps. Take a look at widgets that are already included in this release to know how to write them (basically, it is simply a QML Item). I also invite everybody to ask for the widgets they want.
TMO post is here.
This release brings many good stuff. Three docks are available, but the Maemo dock is a bit broken and might not work flawlessly. Android dock and swipe to unlock are available and work. An app launcher, as well as app shortcuts are also available. A picture frame is also available.
Widgets can now be setup. The change is also transitted to the home screen without deadly
The documentation is fairly complete too. I need to write some more documentation and tutorials but anyone who are curious can take a look at the code now and understand it (I think).
WARNING: you have to clean your cache before using this widgets
- Remove /home/user/.config/SfietKonstantin
- Remove /home/user/.local/share/data/SfietKonstantin/
- Remove /home/user/.cache/SfietKonstantin
You can do
rm nameofthefolder -r
- Package management is just broken. A daemon system that clear cache and refresh cache should come soon.
- Widgets do not take their z position in account.
- To few unit tests.
- Only one wallpaper
- The lock screen do not react to events like phone call or alarm clock.
- Strange glitch when removing icons. (Investigation in progress)
- Clocks use a lot of battery. (fixed in dev version)
- Back button while inserting shortcuts sometimes dissapear (I’m puzzeled by this bug)
- More undiscovered bugs
Q: Is this release stable ? I’m afraid of briking my phone
A: Don’t install this package then. Even if this release is pretty stable, there might still have some problems. Be prepared to reflash, just in case.
Q: I’m not using / inception / open mode / unrestricted sysui, do I need them ?
A: nothing is needed, it should work for both stock and unrestricted system ui. With unrestricted sysuid, the safe mode may be triggered, but it is normal, because of the reboot that is triggered when installing widgets.
Q: I installed it and the status bar restarts ! Is that normal ?
A: Yes, it is. The engine that is responsible of the status bar is also the one that is responsible of the lock screen. Don’t panic. You might panic if the phone became unresponsible and start to reboot in loops. If this happen, and this shouldn’t, you are done for a reflash.
Q: I installed it. Now, how can I unlock my phone ?
A: You should either use a dock that provides unlocking, such as the slide to unlock widget. You can also launch an app, that will automatically unlock the view. Finally, you can type on the grey bar at the bottom.
Q: Widgets / docks are not saved !
A: You should go back in the menu to save widgets or docks. It is for performances and powersaving reasons. Just press the back button and the widgets will be saved and pushed to the homescreen.
Q: What is this grey bar at the bottom ?
A: Currently, only a debug way of unlocking. Soon, it will become an official unlocker, with a drag up gesture.
Q: Low power mode on the N9 is disabled, is that normal ?
A: Yes. The low power mode is a part of the lockscreen. It is not supported now, but I plan to hack it and support it as well.
Q: It is slow ! Performances are horrible !
A: Well, I don’t know why and I even think that it is normal. I tried to use both QML using a bridge and plain graphics view (meego-touch) to code stuff on the lock screen, and it was slow all the time. I don’t know if it is because of the system-ui that is not hardware accelerated, or other things.
